Tourist attractions
In the place where the Danube flows into the Black Sea, you will find a natural paradise, This in the place where the river ends its journey of 2860 km. Centuries to turn, the Delta area has expanded due to the sand brought by the river, thus forming a network of canals, lakes, islands covered with reeds, tropical forest, pastures and sand dunes that now cover an area nearly 5640 square km, of which 3446 square km are located in Romania.
The Danube’s Delta is dominated by swamp vegetation, occupying approx. 78% of the total area. The main species are reed, rush, sedge, the dwarf willow tree and many other species.
The Danube Delta is included in the Biosphere Reserve, being a natural monument protected by UNESCO.
The Caraorman Forest
On a sandy field with a marine origin a forest of oaks has developed, whose name is Caraorman, which means in the Turkish etymology Black Forest.
The old oaks, with imposing branches and rich vegetation make a shadow so thick that there are very dark places. These places gave this name to the forest. Big curiosities are the lianas; they are reaching here the northern limit of their propagation.
These lianas along with other wild plants like vines, tendril and hops are giving to this forest a subtropical appearance. In the Danube’s Delta have been over 1615 species of plants, representing about one third of all known species in the flora of Romania.
Among the trees of the Caraorman forest we can include: secular oaks - over 25 m high, willow, white and black poplars, fluffy ash, the latter being a rare botanical specie.
The Letea Forest
The Letea Forest, in the Danube’s Delta, is the oldest natural reserve in the country being declared in 1938. This is the most northern tropical forest in the world. It starts from the northern village Lebada and lies about 3200 hectares.
The Letea forest is a forest of quetsch oaks, but includes also ash, linden and poplar. The main features of its view are the bent and contort trunks. Also Letea Forest is the only place in Europe that has lianas. The exotic plants come from here, their seeds being brought from Africa by migratory birds.
The Caraorman Grind
In the western part of the Caraorman village, about 500 meters of it, you will find very fine sand dunes. These dunes can be found only in three places in Europe. Herodotus and Polybiu remember in their writings about the large accumulation of sand located at the mouth of the Danube.
These sand dunes from Caraorman are placed on the transverse direction of flow of the Danube and, together with the sand dunes from Letea, have formed the initially cord that blocked the Tulcea bay, transforming it into a lagoon, which was clogged and subsequently gave birth to the Danube Delta .
T he Marine Cemetery Sulina
Unique in the country and even on the continent, the maritime graveyard is a testimonial evidence of the past of this city, tempestuously and in the same time so special. The sea cemetery is composed by a group of three cemeteries: Christian Cemetery, Muslim Cemetery and Hebrew Cemetery.
Among the graves of officers and commanders of the English Royal Navy, the grave of Princess Ecaterina Moruzi can be found, the granddaughter of the Moldavian voivode Ioan Sturza. She was born in Istanbul but found his end in Sulina. You can also found the William’s Simpson grave, the man of confidence of the chief engineer of the Danube’s European Commission. Simpson led the constructions work on the canal for 13 years, from wharfs to the headlights on pier.
